Porcelain Crown (Cap)
A porcelain crown (or cap) is a covering that encases the entire tooth surface restoring it to its original shape and size. A crown protects and strengthens tooth structure that cannot be restored with fillings or other types of restorations.
Although there are several types of crowns, porcelain (tooth colored crown) are the most popular, because they resemble your natural teeth. They are highly durable and will last many years, but like most dental restorations, they may eventually need to be replaced. Porcelain crowns are made to match the shape, size, and color or your teeth giving you a natural, long-lasting beautiful smile.
Reasons to get a porcelain crown:
- Broken or fractured teeth.
- Cosmetic enhancement.
- Decayed teeth.
- Fractured fillings.
- Large fillings.
- Tooth has a root canal.
What does getting a porcelain crown involve?
Because of our CEREC computer and CAD-CAM milling unit we can usually deliver crowns in one appointment. First, Dr. Horwitz or Dorfman will us local anesthesia to get your tooth numb. Once you are sufficiently numb, decay will be removed from your tooth. Your tooth will then be reduced slightly in all dimensions. Once the tooth preparation is complete, the dentist will scan your tooth with our CEREC digital scanner.
We will then design your crown on our CEREC software. This information will be sent to our in office CAD-CAM milling unit where your crown will be made. We will custom stain your crown to match your existing teeth. The crown will then be placed in the kiln where it will cook for about 20 minutes. Once it has cooled your crown will be cemented into place. The whole process usually takes around two hours.
